Innovative Question Practices
The ability to ask novel and innovative questions is at the heart of narrative family therapy practice. David Epston is fond of saying that in therapy he wants to have a conversation with people that they will never forget and to ask them questions that they have never been asked before. in narrative family therapy, a question is never just a question. Questions have the capacity to create new lives and identities, to paint portals to previously unimagined doorways. Therefore, we prefer to use the term "question practices." These question practices do the work of narrative family therapy. The purpose of this section of JNFT is to highlight novel and innovative question practices that seek to inspire our imaginations as narrative family therapists. Proposals for this section should include:(1) the context in which the question was generated, (2) the question itself, (3) the specific practices that informed the question, and (4) a discussion about how the question innovates and evolves the theory and practice of narrative family therapy.
